Introduction
The original DDR2 Speed Tests article was meant to highlight the benefits of faster DDR2 speeds, but, ultimately, testing revealed that on the 680i Core 2 Duo based test platform, there were surprisingly little real world performance gains using faster DRAM. With this article, DDR2 Speed Tests – Part 2, we delve into the matter a little further to see if another chipset like the Intel 975X based motherboard would fare the same, better, or worse. Is it worthwhile spending the extra money on faster DDR2 memory? Does slower memory bottleneck the system? How much does faster memory help in real world applications? We wanted to know as well as you.
Overview
For part 2, we will focus on the Intel 975X platform using four different 2 GB memory kits provided by Crucial Technology. And, like the first article, they are all part of the Crucial Ballistix performance memory family. The only difference is that this batch of RAM comes in black and sports some (cool) LEDs as part of the Ballistix Tracer line.
Here is a summary of the product name, size, speed in MHz and timings. Retail prices are also noted, but are subject to change. Please visit Crucial’s website for current pricing.
